About Sour Lake Health & Medical

Sommer Shackelford is the owner and operator of Sour Lake Health & Medical. Mrs. Shackelford is focused on providing effective, accessible, and personalized medical care for the residents of the community in which she resides.
  • Sommer received her baccalaureate degree in 2004 from Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) with Magna Cum Laude honors, and is a Registered Nurse (RN). During her time at Lamar University, she served proudly as the President of the Lamar University Texas Nursing Students association, attended the Texas Nursing Students Association conference in Austin, Texas, and was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, of which she is still an active member. After graduation, she was employed as an RN by Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital in Beaumont for four years.
  • While employed at Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital in Beaumont; the experience that Sommer acquired as a registered nurse was very diverse and included intense training in cardiovascular, telemetry, intensive care step down, and medical surgical care. She routinely cared for coronary artery bypass (CABG) patients after they were discharged to the progressive care step down unit, post operative patients following percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and intervention (PTCI), carotid artery bypass graft patients, and routinely administered multiple intravenous medications used to treat uncontrolled hypertension, hypertensive crisis, and a variety of coronary arrhythmias. Many chronic illnesses were part of everyday practice on the progressive care unit including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), and cancer. Sommer also performed post operative care, evaluation and treatment of deep vein thrombosis (blood clot), diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and many other common disease states. The experience she obtained with patient care, medication administration, treatments, and the direct communication with multiple specialty physicians served well to prepare her for the transition to advanced practice nursing. Sommer also worked as a nurse’s aide and unit secretary before becoming a registered nurse which instilled in her an understanding and appreciation of the value of each member of the health care team.
  • Sommer received her master’s degree in 2008 from The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas. She holds a Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN), is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) and is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C) by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners National Certification Program validates Sommer as an advanced practice nurse, and she is also a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners organization.
